Everyone knows Tik Tok or someone who uses Tik Tok. Tik Tok has undeniably grabbed attention of everyone. I never imagined myself using their platform until last year but it changed.
Even though Gen Z and late millennials were already on it, the large population were still thinking about it like myself. In a way, I and few of my friends who had never been on Tik Tok’s platform called ourselves as “a content” or a moderate user of social media.
But within first quarter of 2020, that changed. More people started to download the app, sharing their personal content and it worked almost as a hope in this ongoing pandemic situation. The younger generations are active and politically aware. Their content and rage through the media actually shows that they care about the matters that is relevant and appropriate like #blacklivesmatter.
Media has always been an important source on influencing people in any of their decision making process and that hasn’t changed much but the way it’s done has changed completely today. With the likes of social media and an increasing number of people and their involvement, the whole process of media consumption is now changing.
Everyone has a voice and their opinion shows up in a light speed when uploaded on any media. But trust me I did not intend to write any bad thing about Tik Tok here. I love using social media and in fact I sometimes get hooked on it for too long. Guilty.
When I started using Tik Tok, I saw “For You” page on which the content seemed too relevant to me. 🙂 It’s mental. And because it was so relevant I could spent hours swiping through the contents. I am an avid user of Skin care products, I have spent years trying out the best skin care care products I could find from the brands like Lancome, Clinique, Clarins, La Roche Posay, etc. but my search for that perfect moisturiser is a never ending process.
I came across this Tik Tok user called @skincarebyhyram and he mentioned few drugstore products that stayed in my ears and really wanted to give it a try like a Face wash by Simple, and a moisturiser by Cera Ve. Also, I had seen multiple rave reviews by his followers so I really wanted to give it a go.
Here comes the interesting story, I live in Dublin, Ireland. It’s a small and a beautiful country. Last week, I went to a drugstore called Boots in Dundrum Shopping Centre, the aisle where they keep Cera Ve was empty and I thought may be they don’t stock as much. This time it was a bank holiday monday, so I had gone to the city centre. I went in Boots in Jervis Shopping Centre, I almost couldn’t find the section where they keep the Cera Ve products. So, I asked one of the staff member and she showed me the aisle where they displayed the products and the products were sold out. :O I asked her if they had any in stock she nodded her head saying I don’t think so.
I guess, it wasn’t just me who wanted to join the band wagon. 🙂 Ps. I bought the product online, waiting for the delivery.
Having this immense power over people to influence on every stage of their lives is pretty scary. The question is, are we giving it up willingly or is this happening sub consciously? How would we know if we were speaking our mind or being manipulated to act, to speak or to behave in certain ways?
Leaving you with something to think about. 🙂
Share your thoughts, happy to hear.
By the way, Tik Tok may not be banned as Microsoft has released a blog on the potential purchase of Tik Tik. To all the influencers, entrepreneurs, artists, etc. on Tik Tok, keep on shining.
